University of ViennaThe unit has long time experience in developing new targeted therapies from early clinical experience to implementation. Furthermore, they are investigating pathogenetic mechanisms of RA and related disorders in patients and animal models. Professor Josef Smolen (PI ) , head of the Department of Rheumatology and current president of EULAR, has extensive experience in establishing international networks within the field of targeted therapies. His expertise covers clinical, serological, cellular and molecular aspects of rheumatology. Guenter Steiner (co-applicant) is a biochemist and has his main expertise in the field of auto antigens (structure and function), auto antibodies (diagnostics) and auto reactive T cells (effector mechanisms) investigating autoimmune pathomechanisms in both human disease and experimental arthritis. He is particularly experienced in developing diagnostic assays for autoantibody detection and in analysing autoantibody patterns. Kurt Redlich has a strong osteology background and is investigating mechanisms of inflammation and tissue destruction in RA, primarily in experimental arthritis. Martin Aringer focuses on cytokines, signal transduction, and apoptosis regulation in systemic autoimmune disease, with particular emphasis on SLE, scleroderma and myositis. Klaus Machold is the main coordinator of clinical studies and involved in a number of international multicenter clinical trials.
