University Medical Centre Nijmegen , the NetherlandsThis partner has both extensive clinical experience from the development of new therapies and extensive experience from using animal models for identification and validation of new targets for therapy. The PI from Nijmegen (Professor Wim van den Berg) is an international authority concerning the use of the animal models for therapy studies, in particular concerning cytokine antagonism. The group has collaborated extensively with most of the other groups in the consortium concerning validation of targeted therapies in animals.
Department of Biochemistry, Radboud University Nijmegen The autoimmune research group, led by Professor Walther J. van Venrooij and Dr. Ger Pruijn, has more than 20 years experience in molecular biological processes related to autoimmunity. They discovered that RA patients (and only RA patients) make auto antibodies to citrullinated proteins, and developed that finding in the anti-CCP test which is now used all over the world for the specific and early detection of RA. Using proteomics and related techniques, they are extensively engaged in the analysis of protein modifications that are involved in the breaking of tolerance in autoimmune patients. The group has collaborated extensively with most of the other groups in the consortium concerning citrullination in patients and animal models of autoimmunity.
