The Arthritis Research Campaign Epidemiology Research Unit (ARC-EU) in The University of Manchester is the leading unit in the world for research into the epidemiology and genetic epidemiology of rheumatic diseases. Under the leadership of Professor Alan Silman and Dr Jane Worthington expertise will be provided for two aspects of the research programme; (i) the investigation of the genetic basis of susceptibility and progression/outcome of rheumatoid arthritis, (ii) investigation of the interaction of genetic and environmental factors. The extensive DNA collections from well characterised cross-sectional and longitudinal cohorts of RA patients will be important resources for both elements of the work. The Unit has a well-resourced genetics facility equipped with the latest genotyping technologies.
